ABOUT DAVANAGERE

Davanagere is a city in the center of the southern Indian state of Karnataka. It is the seventh largest city in the state, and the administrative headquarters of eponymous Davanagere District. Davanagere became a separate district in 1997, when it was separated from the erstwhile undivided district of Chitradurga for administration conveniences.

Hitherto being a cotton hub and hence popularly known before as the Manchester of Karnataka, the commercial ventures of the city is now dominated by education and agro-processing industries. Davanagere is known for rich culinary traditions which encompass the diversity of entire Karnataka’s dishes due to its geographical position in the state as its epicenter. Notable among them is its aromatic benne dose that is associated with the name of the city.

Geography

Davanagere is the “Heart of Karnataka”. Davanagere is surrounded from Chitradurga, Ballari, Shivamogga, Chikkamagalur and Haveri districts. Davanagere is at the centre of Karnataka, 14°28′ N latitude, 75°59′ longitude and 602.5 meters (1,977 ft) above sea level. Davanagere District receives average annual rainfall of 644 mm (25.4 in).

Davanagere lies in the Maiden region on the Deccan Plateau. The district is bounded by Shivamogga (Malenadu) Area of Hills, Haveri, Chitradurga, Chikkamagalur and Ballari districts. The southern and western parts of the district are irrigated by the waters of the Bhadra reservoir. It has the Asia’s 2nd largest irrigation tank called Shanti sagar which is a major water source for farmers in the district.

Transportation

Davanagere is well-connected by road to Bengaluru, Chitradurga, Pune, Goa, Mangaluru, Mysuru and Chennai through NH 47 (previously National Highway 4). Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, has a divisional office situated in Davanagere City. The city is well-connected to Bengaluru and other cities in the state by KSRTC buses. Many privately-operated buses offer overnight services to other places within the state. The city bus services are operated by both private as well as state owned buses. The ubiquitous Autorickshaws are the backbone for travelling within the city

The city’s railway station comes under South Western Railway zone and was constructed during the British period and has been renovated recently. The station code is DVG. The railway station is quite conveniently located in the centre of the city. Regular train services are available to travel towards Bengaluru, Hubli and Mysore. The nearest airport to Davanagere is Hubballi Airport (IATA:HBX), that is 143 kilometers (89 mi) from the city.

Smart City Mission

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India (GoI) has initiated a Smart Cities Mission (SCM), under which select cities will be developed as smart cities with a focus on improving citizen services. Smart Cities Mission is an urban renewal and retrofitting program with a mission to develop 100 cities all over the country and making them citizen friendly, sustainable and investment destination. Under the smart city scheme, Government has emphasized to improve the basic civic amenities of the cities on one hand and the provision of modern technological advances for ease of living on the other hand.

Davanagere Smart City

Under the Smart Cities Mission program, Davanagere has been selected among the first lot of cities taken up for implementation under the Phase – 1 of SCM, based on the Smart City Proposal (SCP) submitted by the city. The Smart City Proposal for Davanagere envisions to implement a number of projects divided into Area Based Development (ABD) projects and Pan City components

Area Based Development Project

The identified area of the Davanagere city will be developed into a “Smart Area” which will incorporate the features/ elements proposed in its Smart City Proposal including retrofitting of Mandakki Bhatti Area, economic rejuvenation of Mandipet Area (KR Market), redevelopment of Old City Bus Stand as a central transit hub, heritage block around Durgambika Temple Area, roof-top solar panels on various buildings, improved solid waste management, solar powered LED street lights, pedestrian footpaths & cycle track, underground utility corridor, etc.

PAN City Project

The PAN city components will benefit entire city through the application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and will result in improving city’s administration, service delivery and enhance quality of life of the residents of Davanagere City.
